City Views Bonn/Bonner Sommer – 1st New Season Concert of Beethoven Orchestra

August 18, 2008

On Sunday afternoon, August 17, whilst more than 2000 sport fans were cheering on their favourite men’s and women’s team at the finals of the Smart Beach Volleyball Tournament 2008 at Münsterplatz, fans of classical music assembled at Markplatz to enjoy the 1st new season concert of Beethoven Orchestra. Bonn’s leading classical orchestra, which shared the stage with guest singer Sigrun Pálmadóttir (soprano) and Enrico Delamboye (director), presented on this special occasion a great concert with popular works by e.g. Jules Massenet, Gioacchino Rossini, Johann Strauß and Franz von Suppé.

City Views Bonn/Bonner Sommer – Dirty Deeds versus The Killerz

August 18, 2008

On Saturday, August 16, The Killerz and Dirty Deeds, two popular local hard rock cover and tribute bands, attracted many people to their performance at Marktplatz in Bonn. The Killerz, a quintet with Alex (vocals), Andi (drums), Armin (guitar), Martin (guitar) and Rolf (bass) opened the music spectacle with a powerful music show with songs of the well known heavy metal band Iron Maiden. The band’s songlist contains all great hits the British group ever produced, as for example „Iron Maiden“, „Running Free“, „Run To The Hills“, „The Trooper“, „Two Minutes To Midnight“ and „666 – Number Of the Beast“.

After a pause the open-air summer special continued with a hot 65 minute music performance by Dirty Deeds, one of the leading German AC/DC cover and tribute bands. Since 1989 the band, directed by lead guitarist Volker “Vangus” Voigt, plays without exception songs of the Australian group which is considered to be one of the pioneers of hard rock. The other current Dirty Deeds are: Alex “Big Bonn” (vocals), KutA Young (rhythmus guitar), Dr. Williams (bass) and Gonz “the machine” Rudd (drums). Exciting and long applause for The Killerz as well as for Dirty Deeds at the end of their concert.

Jazzenede 2008 – Rootsmusic – Blues – Jazz

August 13, 2008

From August 6-10, the small Belgian polder village Assenede changed its name to Jazzenede. For five days, the Flemish village alongside expressway E34 Antwerp/Knokke was the place to be for fans of ambitious rootsmusic, blues and jazz.  The organizators Strandpaal 28 vzw and Vliet vzw presented on the occasion of this 3rd edition of the bi-annual music spectacle a highly interesting program:  more than 25 well worth hearing concerts - all free of charge - took place under ”Duvel Dream Ship” chapiteau (Duvel is a Belgian special beer with a subtle bitterness) on the festival site at the backside of the new town hall, at jazz pub Strandpaal, Diederiksplein, and at WZC St. Jozef retirement home.

The real Music Band  opened the festival with a  moody dixieland  concert, on Wednesday,  August 6. The next days e.g. Ilse Duyck Group, Rony Verbiest Kwartet, Those Metal Boys with their Metal Toys, Roland & Bruno, Blues Lee, Jihye Lee Quintet, Stefan Bracaval Quartet, Waso, Tricycle, Phoenix Jazz Band, Vidaloo Five, Big Swing Band and Richard Roussselet – Marie-Anne Standaert Special Quintet came to Jazzenede. The very well-attended festival was finally closed on Sunday, August 10 at 11.30 pm with driving funk jazz of the seventies performed by Brazaville, the winners of the newcomer’s contest Jong Jazztalent Gent 2007.  In my opinion, the revelation of  Jazzenede 2008 was  Jihye Lee, a young talented singer from South Korea with a clear crisp voice, who - with her quartet – featured  an impressive performance with modern jazz improvisation and  Korean traditional melodies. I’m convinced Jihye Lee , currently student at Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel, will reach the jazz top very soon.

City Views Bonn – New business Premises at the Corner Friedrichstrasse and Wenzelgasse

August 4, 2008

Mid 2007 the small but long corner building at Friedrichstrasse and Wenzelgasse, which at last accomodated a flower shop, was knocked down. Many Bonner had hoped that at least the beautiful old facade at Wenzelgasse would be preserved and integrated into the new development. Unfortunately, however, this was not the case. The old building was completely replaced by a modern one (360m2) with high glass windows and facades in natural stone, according to the plans of the architects Pascal Schroeder and Stefan Schevardo. The new business premises will locate a store (ground floor, 1st floor and basement) and offices (2nd and top floor).

City Views Bonn/Bonner Sommer – The McDades in Concert

August 4, 2008

On Saturday, August 2, The McDades performed an open-air evening concert in Bonn. With their virtuous, driving and danceable music, a creative mix of traditional cajun, celtic sounds and modern jazz, the very successful Canadian family-band, the brothers and sisters Jeremiah (fiddle/flute/whstle/vocals), Shanon (violin/vocals) and Solon (bass/vocals), together with their cousins Simon Marion (guitar/vocals) and Francois Taillefer (drums/vocals), enchanted and fascinated the hundreds of listeners at Markplatz.
